The Champions Barbecue Alliance Team of the Year program is a year-long chase that begins December 1 and ends November 31. CBA paid member cook teams earn points for every CBA-sanctioned open contest in which they compete, with rankings across Chicken, Ribs, Pork, Brisket, and Overall. Cash and prizes are awarded at the annual banquet to celebrate the top performers.
Every team at a qualifying open contest receives base points plus bonus points tied to contest size. The system rewards consistency and keeps smaller contests competitive with larger ones.
Effective December 1, 2022, only contests with 12 or more entries judged in each sanctioned category qualify for Team of the Year points.
If teams tie for the top position, their eleventh contest is added to the season total. Continue adding subsequent contests until the tie is broken. Teams with fewer than ten contests receive zeros for untallied events.
A 5th-place finish at a 95-team cookoff yields 300 base points plus 75 bonus points for the first 75 teams and 10 additional bonus points for the next 20 teams, totaling 385 points.
1 bonus point is awarded per team up to 75 teams, then 0.5 points per team from 76 to 125.
